Technology is definitely making us all more productive. But I am interested in some of the more hidden costs. What negative things have you seen in your workplace with regards to new technology?
Communicating via instant messaging, email or any mode in which we cannot see the face of the recipient is linked to an increase in incivility and a decrease in empathy. It’s important to get in the room or on video to see one another. This is especially so when working cross culturally. I’ve come across conflict at work where people are shouting at each other on instant messaging rather than taking it offline and working it out face to face.
